Perth, Western Australia

Report and photos by Glenn Wilson, Leigh Cheeseman and John Watkins

Truck Day

Just after arriving at the track, there was a substantial downpour which lasted for around 10 minutes. The crew did a great job to clear the standing water and had the track ready for racing by around 10:30am.

As well as the stock and modified truck class, SCT will also be run for the first time at a national titles as a demonstration class.

Modified Class

Qualifying

Qualifier 1

Josh Pain was fastest in Q1, the only driver to bank a 13 lap run. Matt Primmer looked fast in second just missing the 13 lap mark with Gavin Suckling in third.

Qualifier 2

Rob Thomas had a good run in heat 1 to take the win from Gavin Suckling, however the time would have only been fast enough for third in heat 2. Pain continued his fast pace despite a number of errors which cost him considerable time. Matt Primmer was impressive and put down a 13 lap run to take second.

Qualifier 3

Josh Pain did a PB to take the win by 6s from Matt Primmer. 3rd was Darren Johnston who recovered well after a couple of early mistakes.

Qualifier 4

Matt Primmer and Gavin Suckling had a great battle in Q3 with Matt registering a PB and taking the round win by 1s from Gavin in second. Josh Pain was third after an error filled round.

The grid for Modified A looks like this: 1st Josh Pain, 2nd Matt Primmer, 3rd Gavin Suckling, 4th Darren Johnston, 5th Rob Thomas, 6th Daniel Robbins, 7th Michael Keyes, 8th Rob Maycock, 9th Heath Johnson, 10th Mark MacIntyre.

Finals

A Main 1

In one of the most exciting races I have seen, Pain got away to a clean start but on lap two had a roll over, handing the lead to Primmer. The two had a great battle with never more than a couple of seconds between them. On lap 9, Pain attempted a pass over the Futaba flyover and landed on Primmer who became caught on the pipe. In a great display of sportsmanship, Pain waited for Primmer to regain his position and the two resumed their battle. Primmer drove a great race under pressure and held out Pain all the way to the final corner, taking the win by 0.3s. Third place was Michael Keyes who was the big mover after starting from seventh.

A Main 2

After his second place in A1, Pain drove sensibly to keep his truck on all fours for the race duration to take the win and keep his title hopes alive. Darren Johnston's X-60 looked impressive, taking the race to Primmer all the way to the last few corners. Johnson had a roll over, handing second place to Primmer. He managed to recover and salvage third.

A Main 3

Pain drove another controlled race to lead from start to finish, taking his fourth title of the meet. Primmer had a good battle with Johnston to stay calm and claim second position. Johnston held on for third.

Stock Class

Qualifying

Qualifier 1

With the field split over two heats, it was hard to compare the top runners with Jeff Primmer easily taking the win in heat 2 with daylight second. Heat 2 appeared to be faster with Kai Jaeger picking up where he left off in 4wd yesterday to register the fastest time of the round. Primmer's time was fast enough for second and 3s ahead of John Caval in third.

Qualifier 2

Jeff Primmer was on a mission in Q2, narrowly missing a 13 lap run and just holding off David Wilson who had a flyer. Kai Jaeger made a few mistakes to find himslef back in third.

Qualifier 3

Kai Jaeger returned to the top of the timesheets in Q3 with a 3s win over Jeff Primmer. Third went to John Caval with a PB from David Lawrence in fourth.

Qualifier 4

Primmer had a near faultless run to post a very competetive time (only 2s off his fastest time of day) to take the win from David Wilson and John Watkins. Jai had a horror run with multiple roll overs to finish in eighth.

The grid for Stock A looks like this: 1st Jeff Primmer, 2nd Kai Jaeger, 3rd David Wilson, 4th John Caval, 5th John Watkins, 6th David Lawrance, 7th Daniel Willis, 8th Glenn Flewers, 9th Aaron Bruce, 10th Glenn Chivers.

Finals

A Main 1

Jeff Primmer had a dream start to take an early lead in the first final. Kai had a roll over and fell back to fourth, allowing John Caval and John Watkins through. Caval had a roll over on lap four which let Jaeger back into the race and the positions did not change from that point forward. Primmer appeared to ease off in the second half of the race, helping himself to a 6s win from Jaeger and Caval.

A Main 2

Jeff Primmer took the holeshot and never looked back, lapping the entire field to take the win and the title. The driving behind him was appalling with almost everyone else coming together at some stage. John Caval was issued a stop go penalty which he was forced to repeat after the race referee deemed his stop to be too short (questionable decision). Second place eventually went to David Wilson ahead of Daniel Willis in third. Caval made a good recovery to get back into sixth after falling to last after his penalty.

A Main 3

Having won the title, Primmer sat out A3, giving the TQ position to Jaeger. Unfortunately his bad luck continued and by the end of lap 1, Wilson had taken the lead from Watkins and Flewers. As the race unfolded, Wilson extended his lead while Watkins and Caval battled for third. Wilson held on for the win from Watkins and Caval in third. Watkins put in a great drive under pressure to hold off the fast finishing Caval by 2s.

Final Results

1. Jeff Primmer - 20

2. David Wilson - 19

3. Kai Jaeger - 16

4. John Caval - 16

5. John Watkins - 14

6. David Lawrance - 12

7. Daniel Willis - 11

8. Aaron Bruce - 10

9. Glenn Chivers - 9

10. Glenn Flewers - 8

SCT Class

Qualifying

Qualifier 1

Being the first class on the wet track, most of the SCT's were struggling for grip. Josh Pain emerged as the leader taking Q1 from Rob Maycock who narrowly edged out Keri MacDonald by 0.1s.

Qualifier 2

Josh Pain set the early pace and had a great battle with Keri MacDonald all race. With a couple of corners to go, Pain's car slowed to almost a stop, allowing Keri past to take Q2. Third was Tim Jansen.

Qualifier 3

Pain was again affected by a technical problem and retired on lap 8. That left the door open for Keri to take the win from Rob Maycock and Tim Jansen.

Qualifier 4

With the TQ still up for grabs, Pain came out firing with a fastest time of the day to take the win from Keri. Keri had a great battle with Tim and narrowly held him off to take second.

The grid for SCT A looks like this: 1st Josh Pain, 2nd Keri MacDonald, 3rd Rob Maycock, 4th Tim Jansen, 5th Paul Kluck, 6th Doug Thomson, 7th Daniel Willis, 8th Frankie Tang, 9th Mark McIntyre, 10th Richard Bosworth.

Finals

A Main 1

Pain had a terrible start from pole to let Keri MacDonald through. Pain's car did not look good and he got caught up in the back of the back. Keri drove a controlled race to lead pretty much from start to finish, taking the win by 8s. Second place went to Tim Jansen with Rob Maycock in third.

A Main 2

Josh Pain made sure he kept the fight for the title alive with a controlled run to lead from start to finish to take the win. With an average start, Keri MacDonald's hopes were dashed when he was hit from behind and pushed into the pipe, never properly recovering to finish a distant seventh. Doug Thomson and Rob Maycock had a great battle for second with Thomson prevailing by only 0.7s.

A Main 3

A3 was the decider and it was a great battle between the two fastest drivers of the day. Pain led for the first 5 laps until MacDonald passed him on lap 6. Pain immediately responded, pulling back in front and never looking back, taking the win and the title by 2s from MacDonald. Third place went to Tim Jansen.

Final Results

1. Josh Pain - 20

2. Keri MacDonald - 19

3. Tim Jansen - 17

4. Rob Maycock - 16

5. Doug Thomson - 15

6. Daniel Willis - 12

7. Paul Kluck - 11

8. Mark MacIntyre - 9

9. Frankie Tang - 7

10. Richard Bosworth - 4
